But that wasn't his problem.
His problem we can see here: 1 Chronicles 13:3 "Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul."
Not saying that the ark was some kind magic charm that would have blessed Saul. What I'm saying is that Saul's heart was shown through his actions: although he was serving as king by the Lord's hand, he forgot who his God really was. Even though the crown on his head was put there by God, he didn't take the effort to seek out God's ark during his reign.
